Birr Castle Gardens & Science Centre is open all year and it is home to the pioneering Parsons family since 1620. The Great telescope was built by the 3rd Earl back in 1845 and remined the largest in the world for over 70 years. The grounds cover 120 acreas and include over 50 champion trees from all over the world along with award winning gardens. The Science Centre take you on a journey or extraordinary discoveries - from the invention of the steam turbine, the Great telescope, photographic and the amazing story of the Parsons family. In 2012 a Treehouse Adventure Playground was also added making Birr Castle Gardens a place of interest for all ages. The Castle is open to tours from May to August each year, tours outside of these times can be accommodation in most cases but this must be pre booked and approved.
