The Europe Hotel and Resort is located in a UNESCO World Biosphere — and that’s a responsibility that they take very seriously. Nestled by the world-famous Lakes of Killarney, the hotel is set in acres of natural beauty. As a family-owned company, it is committed to preserving its unique setting for future generations, which is why it has recently made the move to 100% renewable electricity. The decision marks another important milestone in the property’s commitment to sustainability and protecting the idyllic environment they are located in.
Direct, positive impact
By switching to green renewable energy, Europe Hotel and Resort is staying close to one of their core business values: accepting responsibility. As Managing Director of Killarney Hotels Michael Brennan explains, they hope “that our action will inspire other companies to take further steps towards a greener, brighter future”. Operating on 100% renewable electricity has enabled them to make changes that will have a direct positive impact with measurable results — a simple and highly effective way to cut carbon emissions.
Ongoing sustainability
The hotel and resort is part of the Killarney Hotels Sustainability Group, which aims to reduce the environmental impact of the hotel industry’s services and activities. In 2020, the group has focused on reducing carbon emissions by 25% — other measures towards ongoing, sustainable change that the Europe Hotel and Resort has taken in recent years include the responsible sourcing of local food. With a passion for food sustainability and seasonality, the property produces its own beef and lamb from its very own farm (located across 400 acres near the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks mountain range) to reduce food miles. The Europe Hotel and Resort also uses recyclable packaging, has replaced single use plastics and has four electric vehicle charging points on site.
