Over the past year, Ireland has consistently proven itself as a leader in numerous fields, ranging from safety and friendliness to innovation and sustainability. Our achievements include impressive performances from both Ireland and Northern Ireland in the GDS Index and ICCA rankings, highlighting the island of Ireland’s status as a leading destination for conferences, meetings and incentives.
GDSI rankings showcase Ireland’s green ambition
In 2023, Belfast was ranked 11th worldwide and third in Europe by the Global Destinations Sustainability Index (GDSI). But that’s not all – the city also took home the title of ‘Best Conference and Events Destination’ with ICC Belfast winning ‘Best Venue’ at the Conference & Incentive Travel (C&IT) Awards 2023.
These awards shine a light on Belfast’s charm and excellence, serving as clear indicators of the high-quality experience that visitors can expect here.
Following Belfast’s lead, four other destinations across Ireland also achieved rankings in the GDSI, recognising our shared dedication to sustainability.
Kerry maintained its ranking as Ireland’s leading sustainable tourism destination, securing its position within the top 20 globally. The region’s natural beauty is matched by its dedication to preserving the environment, making it a perfect example of how business events can go hand-in-hand with sustainability.
Ranked 26th, Cork is on an ambitious journey to become a climate-neutral city by 2030. The city is seamlessly integrating environmental awareness into all facets of business tourism, enhancing visitor experiences while preserving Cork’s unique heritage for future generations.
Clare secured the 38th spot in the rankings. The region’s initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint and encourage eco-friendly tourism practices are setting a global benchmark for sustainable destination management.
Galway, a city renowned for its arts and innovation, was ranked 39th. From green transportation solutions to sustainable event hosting, Galway exemplifies how cities thrive while being mindful of their environmental impact.
Ireland’s steady rise in ICCA rankings
On the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) list, Ireland climbed to the 18th spot worldwide, showing just how much our appeal as a go-to destination for international conferences has grown.
Dublin clinched the 11th place globally. Cork, Galway and Limerick also made notable progress, while Belfast entered the top 100 for the first time, reinforcing the island of Ireland’s position as a prime business events hub.
A broad spectrum of achievements
Of course, Ireland is recognised for much more than just being green. Consider this: Cork and Dublin were named the second and third friendliest cities in Europe by Condé Nast Traveller, showcasing Ireland’s warm hospitality. Meanwhile, Ireland was also named ‘Best Destination in Europe’ for the tenth year in a row at the 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards.
Safety is another key area where Ireland excels, standing as the third safest country in the world according to the Global Peace Index. Coupled with our renowned friendliness, this makes Ireland an exceptionally welcoming place for international delegates.
Economically, we also lead the way. We’re ranked the second most competitive economy in the 2023 IMD World Competitiveness Rankings. And there’s more – our innovation sector scores high marks on the European Innovation Scoreboard 2023. This mix of economic vibrancy and cutting-edge innovation doesn’t just boost Ireland’s profile; it unlocks unparalleled networking and business opportunities for those attending conferences, meetings or incentives on our shores.
